As far as quality is concerned, they are both pretty much equal.

Most people would currently choose the format based on which films are on which format.

However, as far as future expansion is concerned, HD-DVD wins hands down as it has more features and can be upgraded over the internet as different formats come out.

So, if you want my advice, go for HD-DVD!

    they’re practically the same things.

currently it comes down to price of the players and who has the movie studios you tend to like. Quality wise it tends to be a tossup, so its all based on titles.

Disks? There is no appreciable difference in audio or video quality. Any slight differences are much less than disk to disk variation within either format.

Hardware? Consumer Reports recently tested 11 players and rated a high end Blu-Ray and HD DVD player equal. Lower end HD DVD players (which are also lower priced than lower end Blu-Ray players) were somewhat lower rated.

However, from the perspective of ability to support extra features on disks HD DVD players are far superior. No Blu-Ray player sold before Nov 2007 supports PinP, onboard memory or Internet connectivity (for firmware updates and on-line supplementary content to disks), while all HD DVD players do. The Blu-Ray player specification does not even require Internet connectivity until the next version of the specification (BD-Live) comes into effect at some future date.
