DVDs work well on these because they are also encoded at this resolution. However, Blu-Rays are natively encrypted at 1080 lines which only HDTVs can project. So, you don't have to have a HDTV, but a Blu-Ray in a Blu-Ray player on a standard definition TV is going to look like a regular DVD... So, therefore, not worth the extra cost.
