They use a different algorithm to achieve high quality picture & audio, but both also use a very restrictive copyright protection system that is great for movie studios and bad for the rest of us. Most likely, the studios and hardware companies will realize this in a few years, and then the BluRay or HD DVD players & disks you bought will make nice paperweights.

They are currently 2 different formats that are competing for a ’standard’ in HD DVD players. I prefer the Blue-Ray, as it has a much larger capacity than HD-DVD, among other features. It is a ‘war’ similar to the old ‘BETA-VHS’ competition many years ago. Although BETA had a slightly better picture, (3 db. better) VHS won out due to it’s larger capacity with 4 and 6 hour recording ability. In 2007, Blue Ray outsold HD-DVD players, 2 to 1..!!!

This thing should be kept more in professional differences rather than technical differences. There are no standards on DVD’s for next gen. So companies are fighting to make their own standards Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Pioneeris in to Blu ray and Microsoft , Intel and Toshiba is in to HD.

Technically BluRay and HDDVD both uses blue rays for risk read.
BluRay has max of 50 GB of capacity. while HDDVD is having max of 30 GB
