Some will even upconvert and make the picture a tad bit better as well. It get the absolute best picture, 1080p would be preferred, but 720p looks great as well. That's something I would not sweet. But, to get the full advantage of it, a 1080p TV is preferred. There are plenty of affordable TV's with resolutions of 720p that will do just fine. And yes a Blu-ray player will play a standard DVD w/ no problem. Do not go out & replace your collection. Only buy the new releases on Blu-ray or the ones that you feel are your favorites.
