I have a blu ray player, and am banking on the hope that they beat out hddvd. just wondering who you think will win out

I am looking to buy the Philips HTS3555 home theater system and i read that it had a HDMI output but no HDMI input. this particular system has a HDDVD player that acts as a reciever. I have a few questions and would appreciate any help!
1. what is a HDMI input for and is it important to have?
2. Basically i want to be able to watch movies in HD with surround sound, will i be able to do that without an HDMI input?

I have over 500 DVDs, awesome sound system, beautiful 1080p tv. My dvd player is on it’s last leg, so my question is should I just buy another standard dvd player or is it worth it to upgrade to HD? Obviously, Blu-ray is winning right now, but there are rumors that Microsoft is only backing HD-DVD to buy time for them to get control of future digital distribution, which will eventually be the standard. Personally I think we are a long way off of that point.

For those of you with a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player, is the difference really that noticeable? Is it smarter to go the Blu-Ray route even though HD-DVD is cheaper? I can get the HD-DVD drive for my Xbox 360 for $180, or a PS3 for $400. I’m not planning on replacing my library, but I may buy new dvds in the hd version.

i want to know which brand is better, samsung/pioneer/lg/panasonic?
the player i mean is not bluray, but a dvd player!

I want to buy an external DVD recorder because it is easy to switch from computer to computer and less conflicts but maybe I cannot find an external recorder so an alternate choice or maybe the same difference would be an internal recorder and then buy an external box that connects to the pc via usb or firewire. Any suggestions? Ofcourse I want a blueray double sided burner but not sure on model
